Background

My name is Owen Wong. Although I was originally born in Hong Kong, I currently live in Shanghai, China where I go to Shanghai American School.

I started horseback riding when I was 10 in October 2014. I started at a little riding school in the middle of the city with a Hong Kong couple uncle David and auntie Ann.  They retired from their movie career and were keen to teach kids of horse riding and of taking proper care of horses as they were horse lovers themselves. They inspired me of the unique values of the sport and of horses.  I fell in love with both the sport and horses right away. I then moved on to another stable where I learned the fundamentals of riding from a German dressage coach. Although I live in Shanghai, I devote all my time and energy for the sport in Hong Kong, and fly back to Hong Kong weekly for competitions and training, thanks to the support from the Lo Wu Saddle Club and the Hong Kong Equestrian Federation. At Lo Wu Saddle Club, I was given an opportunity to expose to the holistic BHS approach on riding and horse care. I was certified BHS stage one in riding when I was 14.

Fortunately for me, on long holidays, I have had the oppoartunity to train in many different yards from different countries like Japan, France, Spain and the United Kingdom. I have even been lucky enough to compete in the United Kingdom when training over there. The variety of yards allows me to experience different riding styles and how horses are included in their cultures. The exposure of the different styles and cultures have helped my riding a lot.

Because of the support from the Lo Wu Saddle Club and the Hong Kong Equestrian Federation as well as my parents, I have been able to go to Hong Kong quite frequently for competitions, and I have also been able to ride an incredible horse Mr. Bean. Mr. Bean has given me an amazing season, he helped me whenever I’m making a mistake, and I have definitely learned a lot from him. The season has been an absolute blast and a big part of it was because of him.
