Tier A Sport

The Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) is the Government’s elite sport training systems delivery agent and is committed to working in partnership with the HKSAR Government, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and the National Sports Associations to provide an environment in which sports talent can be identified, nurtured, and developed to pursue excellence in the international sporting arenas.

The current HKSAR Government's Elite Vote Support Scheme (EVSS) adopts a three-tier structure, with sports categorised into Tier A*, Tier A and Tier B. The achievements of senior and junior athletes at major international competitions will be used to identify high performance sports which will be supported by HKSI for a four-year cycle, with a review to be conducted every two years. As of 2021, there are 4 Tier A*, 20 Tier A and 13 Tier B sports under the scheme.

Equestrian sports in Hong Kong was originally classified as an “up-and-coming” sport before 2012, and has been granted a Tier B status since the relaunch of the scheme in 2013. With  consecutive outstanding results and performance achieved over the years, equestrian sports was granted the Tier A status in 2019.

The backbone of the HKSI’s Elite Training System is the Sports Scholarship Scheme, a comprehensive support system for high-performance athletes in Tier A sports. Every Tier A sports is provided with funding for elite training programmes, full sports science and medicine support as well as athlete development programmes. Under the scheme, athletes are to develop skills adding to their sporting capabilities, as well as helping them to excel in life after their athletic career.
