Understanding Equestrian Sports
Eventing

Eventing combines three disciplines starting with a dressage test, usually followed by one round of cross-country then a jumping round. In Hong Kong, this competition commonly takes place in a 1-day format, while overseas shows may take either the short 1-day or long 3-day format. The rider with the lowest penalties from all three phases will be determined the winner.

The cross-country phase is the unique discipline in eventing. It requires both horses and riders to be in excellent shape, to be brave and to trust each other. They must tackle a course of very solidly built natural fences and obstacles, including logs, stone walls, ponds, streams, ditches and banks within an optimum time. Penalties are incurred for refusals and/or finishing over-time.

The HKEF Eventing Horse of the Year Award honours the best performing Eventing horse-rider combination of the season. Points are accumulated for each combination in all HKEF graded and FEI competitions held throughout the season.
