Dear members,

Invitation to Training on Judging Dressage Online by Dressage Anywhere in October

With the commencement of the new HKEF online dressage competition series on the Dressage Anywhere platform, the HKEF, in conjunction with The Hong Kong Jockey Club, is delighted to announce two training sessions in collaboration with Dressage Anywhere. We are honoured to have Ms. Nereide Goodman and Ms. Ruth Chappell, co-founders of the Dressage Anywhere platform, as our speakers to conduct one introductory session for our general members and one thorough training with our on-list dressage judges.

About the speakers

Nereide Goodman is a British Dressage List 1 judge and co-founder of Dressage Anywhere. She started her career in showjumping, moved into eventing and then realised the importance of flatwork and concentrated on dressage. She was a successful rider and trained many of her own youngsters up to advanced level. She coaches riders from Novice to Grand Prix, founded Wellington Riding with her husband John, ran high profile shows for many years and introduced dressage to music to the British scene. Nereide enjoys judging all levels and through Dressage Anywhere, loves making the sport accessible to people all over the world.

Ruth Chappell is co-founder and Operations Director of Dressage Anywhere, running all the day to day activities and new developments. Ruth has had a love of horses from a young age and has enjoyed competing her own horse in affiliated dressage competitions including Regional Championships. Prior to Dressage Anywhere, Ruth managed cross-site digital development teams delivering educational software and materials across multiple sectors.

Introduction to Judging Dressage Online

The Introduction to Online Dressage will be held on Tuesday 20 October 2020 6:00 – 8:00pm. The seminar is open to all HKEF members including riders, trainers, judges and all interested. The session will include discussions on the object and general principles of dressage – the principles of which are the same for both live or virtual shows. Online competitions are a great way of continuing our sport in these unprecedented times. There are obviously some limitations, but also many advantages. These will be addressed during the evening in addition to discussions on what the judge is looking for and how to maximise your marks as well as advice on videoing your test, uploading and other tips for riders and videographers. Interested participants will be provided video materials beforehand for discussion during the session.

Dressage Judges Training for HKEF Listed Judges

On top of the introductory session, the Dressage Judges Training for HKEF Listed Judges will be held on Tuesday 27 October 2020 6:00 – 8:00pm. The training is exclusively open to HKEF listed dressage judges in particular those interested in judging the HKEF online dressage competitions. Enrolled judges will be asked to judge videos of tests in their own time at home – links to tests will be provided. These tests will be discussed during the session and judges will be able to compare their marks and comments on their own scoresheet with those of the master judge. Questions will be invited. The general principles of dressage and the judging of it are exactly the same whether it is live judging or online but the technicalities are a little different. The qualities judges are looking for in determining their assessments of the movements presented in a test whether virtual or live will be discussed. There are some obvious limitations in judging online but also some advantages and these will be discussed in detail.
