Dear members,

The HKEF Preliminary Jumping Course Designer Workshop by FEI Level 2 Jumping Course Designer Mr. Michael Sin was held over the last weekend. A total of 12 participants have successfully completed the workshop.

On 7 October 2022, an online session on Jumping Course Design and related theories was conducted for all participants. Fundamental topics such as the roles and working routines of a Jumping Course Designer, jumping competition formats, types of obstacle and materials were introduced. At the end of the day 1 workshop, all participants were tasked to prepare their own simple jumping course plan which were used for the practical session on next day.

The practical session on the second day of the workshop provided all participants with a real opportunity to build the layout of the jumping courses designed by themselves. Participants learnt all necessary course building materials such as obstacles, poles and safety cups, as well as how to effectively manage the piste crew as a course designer in actual course building. Many of them found the building process a lot smoother with the division of the course into various zones for management.

Being the Course Director, Michael said, “The Course Designer is the person who must put into practice the technical aspects of the different competitions at an event, on grounds that are well prepared and in good condition, with suitable obstacles, adapting the track to the tables used or to the type of competition scheduled. The workshop was successful in terms of sharing my knowledge and experience on jumping course design to all participants and nurturing new blood. The combination of theory and actual course building helped them understand the way to produce a varying and feasible course design. Thank you for inviting me to deliver this workshop and I am happy to repeat this course in the future for anyone with interest to become jumping course designers.”

“Highlight of the session fell on the actual drawing of course plans by us and Michael’s feedback on our works, as well as the on-site course building on the second day of the workshop at BREC,” said Bee Chan, HKJC Senior Manager, Equestrian (PRS) and participant of the workshop. “We have built layouts of the drafted course plans to further illustrate the related distance and improvement on our course plans.”

The HKEF would like to thank Michael for his time and effort in preparing the workshop for us. We sincerely hope that participants found the workshop useful and fruitful in preparing themselves to become qualified course designers in the future.

Please feel free to share with us any suggestions for future workshops. We would love to receive your opinion to offer more training opportunities to nurture our future equestrian talent and professionals.

Best Regards,

Hong Kong Equestrian Federation
