OLYMPICS UPDATES – Patrick Lam on course to qualify for Olympic Jumping Individual

Dear members,

OLYMPICS UPDATES – Patrick Lam on course to qualify for Olympic Jumping Individual

On top of our good news on our eventing rider Thomas Ho secured his Olympics Eventing Individual qualification, the HKEF is delighted to share with you that our jumping rider Patrick Lam has achieved half of the eligibility for the Olympic Jumping Individual.

Patrick has been attempting for the Olympic Minimum Eligibility Requirement (MER) in jumping. He and Claron CR, leased for him by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, achieved the first half of his MER by completing a Grand Prix double clear in Budapest CSI3*-W in August. It was a great performance to be placed 6th in a high quality class. One of the criteria under the FEI Qualification System requires horse-rider combinations to achieve clear from the first round of two Grand Prix competition at CSI3* outdoor or CSIO3* outdoor shows to be eligible for the Olympic Games. In accordance with the requirement, the named combination will need one more clear at a CSI3* or CSIO3* Grand Prix competition by the end of June next year to earn the remaining half of the qualification.

The recent reassurance from the International Olympic Committee to continue the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 has spirited up riders in striving for qualifying results by 21 June next year to join this anticipated quadrennial sports event.

The Tokyo Olympic equestrian events get under way at Baji Koen Equestrian Park and Sea Forest Cross-Country Course from 24 July to 7 August. Hong Kong earned two “firsts” in this Games – the first time ever to be represented in eventing, and the first time to return to jumping event since the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Hong Kong also held 3 places to the Paralympics which will be held from 25 August to 6 September 2021 in the same venue. Timothy Tsang, Natasha Tse and Fleur Schrader will form Hong Kong’s first para-dressage team to the Games.

The HKEF would like to wish the best of luck to all riders for their preparations for Tokyo next summer.

Best Regards,

Hong Kong Equestrian Federation
