Gabby Thomas with Emerald Butterfly claimed the Eventing Horse of the Year Award 2019 and champion of the Senior Interschool Equestrian Challenge 2019 (30 March 2019, Saturday)

As a kick off of the HKEF Horse of the Year Shows of the current season, the Eventing Horse of the Year Show 2019 cum HKEF Senior Interschool Equestrian Challenge 2019 completed on last Saturday 30 March 2019 at Beas River Equestrian Centre. A record high number of 30 entries were received for this year’s event, which is more than a double of last year’s number of entries. 21 rider-horse combinations competed at the 80cm competition while the rest were in the 100cm competition.

After a series of exciting competitions in the Jumping, Dressage and Cross Country phases, Noemi Doerfer riding Smart Planet from Clearwater Bay Equestrian and Education Centre crowned the first place of the 80cm class with only 31.3 total penalties, followed by Caroline Holm with Griffindor at 32.4 penalties and Sarah Corner with Noble Defeater at 34.4 penalties respectively. In the 100cm class, the first place was taken home by Gary Johnston on Bentley from Lo Wu Saddle Club with solely 30.5 total penalties. Meanwhile, the second and third places were awarded to Sarah Corner with Arium Aurigan and Gabby Thomas with Emerald Butterfly respectively. Apart from being the last competition for riders to aim for the Eventing Horse of the Year Award, the results of two classes held today were also counted for the HKEF Senior Inter-school Equestrian Challenge 2019 Final. Within 9 junior riders who were qualified to and participated in the Final by competing in 2 Eventing Competitions earlier in the season without elimination, Gabby Thomas from International College Hong Kong with 42.93 total penalties have taken home the first place of the HKEF Senior Interschool Equestrian Challenge 2019. She received a HKD$10,000 worth voucher for training sessions. Besides, the second, third and fourth places of the Challenge were awarded to Zoe Koerber from King George V, Jade Leshetz from West Island School and Julie Bardin from King George V respectively. They received rosettes and gifts as a token of appreciation. Please find the attached competition result for your information.

The climax of the Prize Giving came when the winner of the Eventing Horse of the Year Award 2019 was announced. With the highest accumulated points of 30 , Gabby Thomas with Emerald Butterfly became the best eventing combination of this season and took home the Eventing Horse of the Year Award 2019. Christian Allderidge riding Charlie Victor with 20 points and Gary Johnston riding Bentley with 16 points were on the second and third places of the final ranking respectively.

The Eventing Horse of the Year Show marked the end for our eventing competition season. The HKEF would like to express our warmest congratulations to all winners and our sincere gratitude goes to all officials, volunteers, BREC team, riders and parents for their support to this event possible.

After the Eventing Horse of the Year Show today, the second episode of our HOYS series will be the annual flagship event for Jumping discipline, the LONGINES Jumping Horse of the Year Show 2019.
